Articles > Discerning Atonement Meanings

By Ian Hufton

Regarding the first two  annual festivals, we  have  learned  to  apply

the  spiritual understandings …….given  by  Paul …..when  he  wrote  to …..

……  New  Testament (New Covenant) gentile  converts …..in  the  city  of  Corinth.

PASSOVER   AND  UNLEAVENED  BREAD  UNDERSTANDINGS

Many of the  ……New  Testament (New Covenant) understandings …. we

have  for Passover and  Unleavened Bread   are  found  in these  following  verses.

1 Cor 5:6  Your glorying is not good. Do you not know that

……..a little leaven leavens………… the whole lump?

1 Cor 5:7  Therefore purge out the ………old leaven, ……..that you may be a new lump,

since you truly ……..are unleavened……… For indeed

Christ (Jesus), ……..our Passover,…… was sacrificed for us.

1 Cor 5:8  Therefore let us……. keep the feast,……. not with ……old leaven,…… nor with

………the leaven of malice and wickedness,……… but with

……….the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth……….

We  understand  that  God  first  gave  the  festivals  to Israel  some

1,500 years  before  Christ (Jesus) but  that …….. the meanings of the  festivals ……

have been…….enlarged  and  enhanced…….. as ……..more  scripture  was  written.

OUR   FULLEST   UNDERSTANDINGS  OF ……… THE  MEANINGS

Now days, we  focus  on  …….the  New  Testament (New Covenant)

passages….to  comprehend  the  fullest  meanings of …….each festival…. while

at the same time remembering ……the meanings  God  gave at  the start (Old Testament).

As  Paul  was teaching   the new  gentile (New Testament) church  members   at  Corinith

he focused  on  …….the New Covenant (New Testament) Blood  of  God’s  Passover  Lamb (Jesus)

….. as  the focal  point  of …. the  Passover ….Holy convocation (meeting) [see Leviticus chap. 23].

1 Cor 11:23  For I received ……..from the Lord ……that which I also

delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on ……..the same night…… in

                     which He (Jesus) was betrayed took bread;

1 Cor 11:24  and when He (Jesus) had given thanks, He (Jesus) broke it and said, "Take, eat; this is

….…. My body…… which is …….broken for you;…… do this in

                       rememberance of Me (Jesus)."

1 Cor 11:25  In the same manner He (Jesus) also took …….the cup ……..after supper, saying,

"This cup is ……..the New Covenant (New Testament)……… in My blood…………..

This do, as  often as you drink it,………….. in remembrance of Me (Jesus).

1 Cor 11:26  For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you …….. proclaim the

                        ……….Lord's(Jesus) death ……….till He (Jesus) comes………..

1 Cor 11:27  Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord (Jesus)

in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord (Jesus).

In the twenty first century ……we have  learned …. not to  look at theblood  of

……a physical  lamb ……but  to where  ……it was  pointing,…. that being the

….. shed  blood  of  the  Passover  Lamb  of  God ( i.e. Jesus).

 NEW   TESTAMENT   THINKING

So  our  understandings  of the  Passover  and  Unleavened Bread

Festivals (rehearsals),  are  mightily  enhanced  by  focusing  and accepting the

expanded  teachings  from New Testament (New Covenant) verses.

SPIRITUALLY   DISCERNING   ATONEMENT   MEANINGS

Now  let  us  use  the  same approach  for  the  meanings  of  Atonement.

1 Cor 2:13  These things we also speak, not in words which man's wisdom

                            teaches but …….which ……the Holy Spirit …..teaches,…..

                         ……. comparing…… spiritual  things…… with spiritual……

1 Cor 2:14  But the natural man does not receive the things of the

Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know

them, because they ……..are spiritually discerned…….

 ATONEMENT   LESSONS  FROM  HEBREWS

Lesson  1

Heb 2:17  / that He (Jesus) might be ……..a merciful and faithful High Priest (Jesus)……..

in things pertaining to God, to make……. propitiation (2433)….. for the sins of the people.

                                           (2433 MEANS….  to  conciliate ….or….ATONE   FOR   SINS)

Heb 3:1  Therefore, …….holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling,…… consider

the Apostle and ………High Priest of our confession,……. Christ Jesus,……

ATONEMENT   LESSON   N0. 1

Jesus  has replaced  the physical high priest (Old Testament Levitical Priesthood)

and  become  the  mighty …..heavenly…..High… Priest….

who…..Himself (Jesus)made  the… atonement for our sins

……………………………………………………………………………………….....................

Lesson 2

Heb 5:9  And having been perfected, He (Jesus) became

…….the author of eternal salvation………. to all who ……….obey Him (Jesus)

Heb 5:10  called ……….byGod …….as High Priest…… "according to the

order of Melchizedek,"

Heb 5:11  of whom (Jesus) we have much to say, and hard to explain, sin

you have become dull of hearing.

ATONEMENT   LESSON   N0. 2

God’s   salvation  plan  includes …… each  person  looking  to….  and

………obeying  the  great High Priest (Jesus)…….given  by  God  the  Father

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson 3

Heb 6:20  where the forerunner has entered for us, ……..even Jesus,……

having become ………High Priest forever…….. according to the order of Melchizedek.

ATONEMENT LESSON   N0. 3

The Old Testament (Old Covenant) high priests (Levitical Priesthood)

were  a shadow  of  the…… great …. FOREVER ….. high priest (Jesus),….Who has

now  entered  the  holy  of  holies (Heaven) to  make  intercession  for  those  who  are

 obeying  Christ.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson 4

Heb 7:18  For on the one hand there is …….an annulling of the former commandment

because of its weakness and unprofitable-ness,

Heb 7:19  for the law made nothing perfect; on the other hand, there is the

bringing in of a better hope, through which ……..we draw near to God.

ATONEMENT  LESSON  N0. 4

With  our  ……..New Testament (New Covenant)understandings,……

we are to  look  past …….the  former  commandments…… to  behold ……

the  current actions….  of  ……….the  Heavenly  High Priest (Jesus).

………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson 5

Heb 7:22  by so much more ……..Jesus …..has become a surety of

.a better covenant.

Heb 7:23  Also there were ………many priests (Levitical Priests),…….

because they were ……. prevented…. by death ………from continuing.

Heb 7:24  But ……..He (Jesus),…….. because ……….He (Jesus)

continues forever, ……has ( NOW  and  FOREVER) …..an  unchangeable

 priesthood.

Heb 7:25  Therefore He (Jesus) is also able…….. to save …….to the uttermost

those ….. who come ………to God ……..through Him (Jesus), …..since

He (Jesus) always lives to make …….intercession …….for them.

                                                          (means….. ENTREATY….)

Rom 8:34  Who is he who condemns? It is Christ (Jesus) who died, and

furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God the Father,

who also……makes……. intercession…. for….. us.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 5

Jesus, our current High  Priest  in Heaven is with God the Father

making intercession  for  us, as foreshadowed  by  the  physical high priests

(Old Covenant Levitical Priesthood) going into the Holy of Holies,  once  per

year  on  the  day  of  Atonement.

NOTE : The day  of  Atonement was ……. the  ONLY  day  of  the  year ….

when the high priest (Old Covenant Levitical Priesthood) went in to God’s seat

……..to make intercession  and  atonement for  the  people.

…………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson   6

1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light as He (Jesus)  is in the light, we have

fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses

us from all sin.

1 John 1:9  If …….we confess our sins, …….He (Jesus) is faithful and just

……to forgive us…. …..our sins …..and ……to cleanse us …….from all

unrighteousness.

Mat 6:11  Give us this day our daily bread.

Mat 6:12  And …….forgive us…… our debts, …….As we forgive our debtors.

Heb 7:26  For such…….. a High Priest (Jesus) ………was fitting for us,

who is holy, harmless, undefiled, separate from sinners, and has become

…..higher than the heavens;

Heb 8:1  Now this is the …….main point ……of the things we are saying: We

have such ……a High Priest (Jesus), who is seated …..

at the right hand of the  throne of the Majesty in the heavens,

Heb 8:2  a Minister of …….the sanctuary …..and of…….. the true tabernacle…..

                 which ………the Lord(Jesus) erected,…… and…….. not man.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 6

The main  thing ……….is Jesus (our Heavenly High Priest) is sitting  next

to  our  loving  Heavenly Father and working  daily with  our  daily situations.

Also, the true  place  …..to  focus  our  minds …. is  on  the true God –made Tabernacle.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  7

Rev 12:10  Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, "Now ……salvation,…… and

strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ(Jesus) have

come, for…….. the accuser of our brethren (Satan),….. who accused them

……before our God day and night,……. has been cast down.

Rev 12:11  "And …….they overcame him (Satan) by the blood of the Lamb(Jesus)….

and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.

Heb 9:7  But into …….the second part (Holy  of  Holies) ………the high priest

(Old Covenant Levitical Priesthood) went alone …..once a year, (on Atonement)

not without……. blood,…… which he offered for himself and for the

peoples sins committed in ignorance;

Heb 9:8  the Holy Spirit indicating this, that……. the way into the Holiest……. of All was

not yet made manifest while ………the first tabernacle was still standing.

Heb 4:16  Let us therefore…….. come boldly to the throne of grace,…… that we may

obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 7

Now ……… in  the  twenty first century …….we are  to go to the

throne  of  grace  where ……. Jesus (our High Priest) speaks …….

with the Father and the  devil (Satan) on  our  behalf.

……………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  8

Heb 9:11  But (Jesus)Christ came as High Priest …….of the good things to

come, with the greater and ……..more perfect tabernacle ……not

made with hands, that is, not of this creation.

Heb 9:12  Not with the blood of goats and calves, but ……..with His (Jesus)

own blood He (Jesus) entered ……….the Most Holy Place …

                  once……..for all,…..having obtained ……..eternal redemption.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 8

The  activities of  the  physical high priests (Old Covenant Levitical Priesthood)

in the old Atonement services (Leviticus 16) have ceased.

When we observe Atonement now we are to  look where ……..these scriptures

are  pointing us……  To the past and current work of our great High Priest Jesus Christ.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson   9

Heb 9:14  how much more shall ……the blood of (Jesus) Christ,…… who through

the eternal Spirit ………offered Himself (Jesus) without spot to God,……. cleanse

……your….. conscience from…… dead works ……to serve….. the living God?

Heb 9:15  And for this reason He (Jesus) is the Mediator of …….the new covenant

(New Testament), …….by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions

under the first covenant (Testament), that those who are called may receive the

promise of the eternal inheritance.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 9

We  are …….. New  Covenant (New Testament) believers …….and we should

be keeping Atonement ……. by  New Covenant (New Testament) texts

….  Our …… sins are mediated by……Jesus (the active …..New Testament….

.High Priest)

………………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  10

Heb 9:22  And according to the law almost all things are purified with blood, and

………without shedding of blood……… there is ………no remission.

Heb 9:23  Therefore it was necessary that ……the copies of the things….. in the heavens

should be purified ……..with these, ………but

                                             ANIMAL  BLOOD  SACRIFICES

the heavenly things themselves with …….better sacrifices…… than these.

                                                THE  BLOOD  OF  JESUS

Heb 9:24  For Christ(Jesus) has not entered ……..the holy places made with hands,……

(AN  ATONEMENT  DAY - EVENT  FOR  HUMAN  PRIESTS) (Old Covenant)

which are ……copies of the true, (SHADOWS  OF  THE  TRUE)……but into

               heaven itself…now…..to…… appear…. in …..the presence ….of God….. for us;

JESUS  IS  OUR  ADVOCATE  IN  THE  PRESENCE   OF  THE  FATHER

1 John 2:1  My little children, these things I write to you, so ………that you may not sin.

And ….if anyone sins,….. we have….. an Advocate ….with the God the Father,

Who is Jesus Christ the righteous.

1 John 2:2  And He (Jesus)……..Himself  (Jesus) is …the propitiation (Atonement)

for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

Heb 9:25  not that He (Jesus) should ………offer Himself (Jesus)……..

often, as the high priest (Old Covenant Levitical Priesthood)

        …enters the Most Holy Place (Old Covenant)……every year …with blood of another;

                                             ONLY  ON  THE  ATONEMENT  DAY

ATONEMENT    LESSON    N0.  10

Jesus ….(OUR  ATONEMENT)…..is  daily  with God  the  Father  …..as  our  advocate,

…..  ready ……… to intercede…… for  us ………when  we  confess.

……………………………………………………………………………

Lesson   11

Heb 9:28  so ……Christ(Jesus) was offered once…… to ……..bear the sins of many.

To those ……..who ……eagerly …..wait …for Him (Jesus)….He (Jesus) will appear

………a second time, apart from sin,……. for salvation.

(THIS  TIME  …WITHOUT ….. THE   SIN  LOAD)

Heb 10:1  For the law, having ………a shadow ……..of the good things to come,…..

and not the very image of the things, can never with these same sacrifices,

which they offer continually year by year, make those who approach perfect.

Heb 10:3  But…….. in those sacrifices……. there is ……..a reminder of sins

         ….every year.

Heb 10:4  For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and goats (Old Covenant)

         could ….take away sins.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 11

God the Father  reminds ……us every year….. about …… sins.  Reminding  us

that  atonements  are  made by Jesus (OUR  GREAT  HIGH  PRIEST) …..when

we  confess our  sins.

……………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  12

Heb 10:10  By that will …….we ……have …..been ….sanctified ….through the

offering …of …..the …..body ….of …..Jesus Christ…. once …for…. all.

Heb 10:11  And every priest stands ministering daily and offering repeatedly the

same….. sacrifices,….. which….. can…. never ……take away sins.

Heb 10:12  But …..this….. Man (Jesus),….. after He (Jesus) had ….offered

(Himself)(Jesus)….one sacrifice….….for ….sins …forever,……. sat down at

…..the right hand ….of God the Father,

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 12

The  Atonement  service  of  Leviticus 16  has  now  been  replaced

by  an ever-living high priest (Jesus) who made one sacrifice (HIMSELF)

which  provides for  all  atonement  procedures .  This one sacrifice covers

all servants of Christ who seek forgiveness.

……………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  13

Heb 10:14  For by one offering He(Jesus) has …perfected (COMPLETED or

ACCOMPLISHED) ……forever …..those ….who ….are ….being …..sanctified.

                                                      (BEING  MADE  HOLY)

Rev 1:5  and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and

the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him (Jesus)…..who… loved ….us…

              …..washed …..us from …..our sins… in His (Jesus)… own blood,

John 1:29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold!

….The Lamb of God (Jesus)…who … takes.. away …the… sinof the world!

(NEW   COVENANT     SINS    ARE     REMOVED    THIS   WAY)

Rev 5:9  And they sang a new song, saying: "You (Jesus) are worthy to take the scroll,

And to open its seals; For You (Jesus) were slain, And have …….redeemed… us …to

God the Father by …..Your (Jesus) …..blood out of every tribe and tongue and

people and nation,

Rev 7:14  And I said to him, "Sir, you know." So he said to me, "These are the ones who

come out of the great tribulation, and ……washed …..their… robes ….and

made them ……white ….in …..the blood …of the Lamb (Jesus).

(SPIRITUALLY,    SINS    ARE   BEING   REMOVED  BY   JESUS   THE

ADVOCATE    AND   THE    ACTION  OF  HIS (Jesus)  SHED  BLOOD)

1 John 1:9  If ….we …confess…. our…. sins, He(Jesus) is faithful and just….

to…. forgive…us….. our ….sins ….and …..to ….cleanse (Make Atonement)

us… from ….all ….unrighteousness.

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 13

Our  GREAT  HIGH  PRIEST (Jesus)  in Heaven forgives our sin and washes us

clean based  on His one-time sacrifice and Hisdaily intercession with

God the  Father.

…………………………………………………………………………………………………

Lesson  14

Heb 10:19  Therefore, brethren, ….having ….boldness …to …enter… the Holiest..

by the blood of Jesus,

(NOTE:  WE CAN DIRECTLY APPROACH THE    THRONE OF GOD THE FATHER)

Heb 10:20  by …..a …….new ……and …..living…. way… which ….He (Jesus)

consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh,

(NEW  COVENANT  ATONEMENTS  ARE  VERY  DIFFERENT  FROM THE  OLD)

Heb 10:21  and having …….a …..High …..Priest (Jesus)…. over the house of God,

Heb 10:22  ….let… us ….draw …..near… with ….a ….true…. heart…..

in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an

evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.

Heb 10:23  Let …..us…. hold…. fast the confession of our hope….. without wavering,

for He (Jesus) who promised is faithful.

Heb 10:24  And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

ATONEMENT    LESSON   N0. 14

We can  and  should approach our Father  in  Heaven through  the  work of  our

high  priest  (Jesus). We can confess  our  sins  and  expect  to be  forgiven

through  the blood of  Jesus. The Atonement process  is  now available

365 days per  year.

………………………………………………………………………………………………

FINAL   SUMMARY

Our loving Father  and  Jesus want all humans  to come  to repentance,

have  our  sins  forgiven, walk in  the  Spirit and finally be  given eternal life.

2 Pet 3:9  The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness,

but   is longsuffering toward us, …..not …..willing ….that ….any …should …perish

but that all  should come to repentance.

Psa 103:8  The LORD is merciful and gracious, Slow to anger, and abounding in mercy.

Psa 103:9  He will not always strive with us, Nor will He keep His anger forever.

Psa 103:10  He has ……not dealt with us …..according to our sins,….. Nor punished

                                                    us according to our iniquities.

Psa 103:11  For as the heavens are high above the earth, So great is

                                                     His mercy toward …..those…. who ….fear.. Him;

Psa 103:12  As far as….. the…. east …is …from ….the …west,… So far has

He removed our transgressions from us.

Psa 103:13  As a father pities his children, So the LORD pities….those…who..fear.. Him.

Psa 103:14  For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust.

1 John 1:7  But if we walk in the light asHe (Jesus) is in the light, we have fellowship

with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

Atonement for  sins in  the  New  Testament is accomplished  by  the  shed  blood

of  Jesus and His intercession with  the  Father . Thus, Jesus  our  high priest

removes our  sins ……..as ……far… as… the ….East … is … from …the  West.

John 1:29  The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold!

The Lamb of God (Jesus)……who… takes.. away …the… sinof the world!
