Articles > Was Jesus Christ A Jew?

by Dale Murphy

Many of us know people who do not believe that Jesus Christ was a Jew.

Billions of people refuse to believe in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and there are many who consider themselves to be devout Christians, who do not believe that Jesus Christ was a Jew.

Can we prove from the pages of our bible that Jesus Christ was a Jew?

In the Old Testament there are many books of the bible that discuss the coming of a future Messiah or Jesus Christ of the New Testament. This coming Messiah or Jesus Christ is described in many different ways and in order to fully understand the true lineage of Jesus Christ it will serve us well to review these different descriptions.

As we move forward in our search for the truth there are some word definitions, key words and key word phrases that we need to pay close attention to, which will help us fully comprehend the depth of the true lineage of Jesus Christ.

Word definitions: lineage, direct descent from a particular ancestor; ancestry (source: The American Heritage Dictionary)

Key words: conceive, conceived, David, God, Holy Spirit, Immanuel, Jacob, Jesus, Jesus Christ, Jews, Joseph, Mary and virgin

Key word phrase: house of David, lineage of David

The famous prophecy of Christ’s virgin birth can be found in Isaiah 7:14 Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold a virgin shall conceive and bear a son and shall call his name Immanuel.

Scriptures fulfilling this prophecy are found in Matthew 1:18-25 and Matthew 2:1-2, as well as Luke 1: 26-33 and Luke 2:4-7.

The Birth of Jesus (Matthew 1:18-25)

Matthew 18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Spirit 19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a public example, was minded to put her away privily. 20 But while he thought on these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared unto to him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shall call his name Jesus: for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us. 24 Then Joseph being raised from sleep did as the angel of the Lord had bidden him, and took unto him his wife: 25 And knew her not till she had brought forth her firstborn son: and he called his name Jesus.

The Visit of the Magi (Matthew 2:1-2)

Matthew 2:1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

The Angel Gabriel Appearing to Mary (Luke 1:26-33)

Luke 1: 26 And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, 27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David and the virgin’s name was Mary. 28 And the angel came in unto her and said, Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. 29 and when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. 30 And the angel said unto her, Fear not Mary: for thou hast found favor with God. 31 And, behold, thou shall conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shall call his name JESUS 32. He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David 33. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob forever: and of his kingdom there shall be no end. 34 Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man? 35 And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Spirit shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Luke 1:37 For with God nothing shall be impossible.

The Birth of Jesus (Luke 2:4-7)

Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) 5 To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child.6 And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. 7 And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

Mary conceived or became divinely impregnated with the seed of David through the Holy Spirit of God.

More word definitions: seed a source of beginning, offspring, progeny, ancestry

More keywords: David, Jesse, Branch, Jesus, Judah, seed

Isaiah 11:1 And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: 2 And the spirit  of the Lord shall rest upon him, and the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.

Jeremiah 23: 5 Behold the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch and a King shall reign and prosper and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth. 6 In his days Judah shall be saved and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

This is one of several passages which refer to the Messiah Jesus Christ as described “unto  David a righteous Branch and a King, and the Lord of Righteousness

David Becomes Judah’s King (King of the Jews)

2 Samuel 2:4 And the men of Judah came, and there they anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, That the men of Jabeth-gilead were they that buried Saul.

 David Also Becomes Israel’s King

2 Samuel 5:3 So all the Elders of Israel came to the king of Hebron; and king David made a league with them in Hebron before the Lord: and they anointed David king over Israel.

In the book of Acts chapter 13 the Apostle Paul was speaking to the congregation at Antioch about the lineage of Jesus.

Acts 13:21 And afterward they desired a king: and God gave unto them Saul the son of Cis a man of the tribe of Benjamin, by the space of forty years. 22 And when he had removed him, he raised up unto them David to be their king: to whom also he gave testimony and said, I have found David the son of Jesse, a man after mine own heart, which shall fulfill all my will. 23 Of this man’s seed hath God according to his promise raised unto Israel a Savior, Jesus

In the Epistle of Paul to the Romans 1:3 Concerning his son Jesus Christ our Lord, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.

In Romans chapter 15:12 And again Isaiah saith, There shall be a root of Jesse, and he that shall rise to reign over the Gentiles: in him shall the Gentiles trust.

 Peter’s Sermon

Acts 2:29 Men and brethren, let me freely speak unto you of the patriarch David, that he is both dead and buried, and his sepulcher is with us unto this day. 30 Therefore being a prophet and knowing that God had sworn with an oath to him, that of the fruit of his loins, according to the flesh, he would raise up Christ to sit on his throne.

Well, are you convinced yet that Jesus Christ, is of the seed of David, the lineage of David and the house of David?

Well you should be, after all, the patriarchs David, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Samuel all prophesied of the coming Messiah (Jesus Christ) and the apostles Matthew, Luke, Paul and Peter were actually with Jesus Christ during his ministry on this physical earth.

Do you understand that King David was of the tribe of Judah (Jews), that he was King of Judah (Jews) and also King of Israel?

What? Do I still hear murmurings from those of you that just hate to think that Jesus Christ was born a Jew, lived in a Jewish family, in a Jewish community and taught in the Jewish synagogue?

Stop and ask yourself the following question. Would the Jews have allowed anyone that was not Jewish to teach in the synagogue?  The obvious answer is no, they would not. The Jews allowed Jesus to teach in the synagogue because they knew that he was a Jew.

 Jesus Reads the Scriptures

Luke 4:14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about. 15 And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all. 16 And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

Well if you are not convinced, there is more, much more.

Let’s Start With the Genealogy of Jesus

Matthew 1:1-17 and Luke 3:23-38 covers the genealogy of Jesus, for the purposes of this study we are going to review some of the verses in Matthew, however it is recommended that you go back and read the complete genealogy of Jesus in Matthew and Luke for a deeper and more complete understanding of the lineage of Jesus Christ.

 Matthew 1:1 The book of the generation of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham. 2 Abraham begat Issac; and Issac begat Jacob; and Jacob begat Judas and his brethren;

 Matthew 1:6 And Jesse begat David the king; and David the king begat Solomon of her that had been the wife of Urias;

Matthew 1:16 And Jacob begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus who is called Christ.

Let’s not forget the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at Jacob’s well.

John 4:7 There cometh a woman of Samaria to draw water: Jesus saith unto her, Give me a drink. 8 (For the disciples were gone away unto the city to buy meat.) 9 Then saith the woman of Samaria unto him, How is it that thou, being a Jew, askest drink of me, which am a woman of Samaria? For the Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

Now let’s discuss the word Jews.

In the modern order of the Old Testament Scriptures, the word Jews appears for the first time in 2 Kings 16:6 the term is derived from the name Judah and applied to all members of the tribe bearing his name. It was also used for all subjects of the kingdom of Judah in contrast to the kingdom made up of the ten tribes who seceded.

Well you may not like what you have just read and/or heard but the truth is, it is a matter of fact, that JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD and SAVIOR WAS A JEW

 More keywords: deny

To say that you love Jesus Christ but deny his lineage and teachings is placing yourself in a position to forfeit your right to the tree of life. I do not think that any Christian really wants to make that forfeiture.

2 Timothy 2:8 Remember that Jesus Christ of the seed of David was raised from the dead according to my gospel.

2 Timothy 2:12 If we suffer, we will also reign with him; if we deny him, he also will deny us

 The Seven Sealed Book

Revelation 5:5 And one of the elders saith unto me, Weep not: behold, the Lion of the tribe of Juda, the Root of David, hath prevailed to open the book, and to loose the seven seals thereof 6 And I beheld, and, lo, in the midst of the throne and of the four beasts, and in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as it had been slain, having seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth.

The knowledge of the genealogy and lineage of Jesus Christ is of obvious importance as it has been placed strategically at the beginning of the New Testament with the Genealogy of Jesus in Matthew 1:1-17. Also the New Testament ends after the 22nd chapter of Revelation in which Jesus Christ himself declares in verse 16 (red letters),

I, Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches, I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.

In the world we live in today, it is so extremely easy to develop a flawed belief system outside of the true word of God, because there are mountains of information on the subject of God and his teachings, by various so called theologians, most of which are trying to sell you their agenda or ideas that are not supported by scripture. Additionally a great deal of the information available is incorrect, misleading, tweaked, twisted or just out right lies that cause tremendous confusion concerning the truth of almost any subject and especially the word of God.

More word definitions: confusion to perplex or bewilder; befuddle, to assemble without

order or sense

1 Corinthians 14:33 For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.

As carnal beings, the human race has a tendency to get things done with as little effort as possible. Many times that causes us to err, because we have not done due diligence to the subject matter that we have collected along the path of life. We develop our belief system, over a period of time, from information that we have read or heard from people we know, trust, love, go to school with, work with, family, friends and various other sources, a little here and a little there. However, most of the time if the information sounds good or we believe it to be true because of familiarity with the source, we rarely if ever do any research to confirm the truth of the information that our minds continuously collect.

A classic example of believing something is true because of the source happens to most Christians every week, because they blindly trust in every word that their minister or pastor tells them. Listening to ministers that are lacking in a full understanding of the subject matter that they preach or those that have a hidden agenda and some even preach hate towards various races or ethnic groups.

 The Greatest Commandment

Matthew 22:36, Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. 38 This is the first and great commandment. 39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shall love thy neighbor as thyself. 40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

 The Good Samaritan

Luke 10:25 And, behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master what shall I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said unto him, What is written in the law? How readest thou? 27 And he answering said, Thou shall love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind and thy neighbor as thyself. 28 And he said unto him, Thou has answered right: this do, and thou shall live. 29 But he, willing to justify himself, said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 And Jesus answering said, A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, which stripped him of his raiment, and wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 And by chance there came down a certain priest that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And likewise a Levite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him. 34 And went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 And on the morrow when he departed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said unto him, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spends more, when I come again, I will repay thee. 36 Which now of these three, thinkest thou, was a neighbor unto him that fell among the thieves? 37 and he said, He that showed mercy on him, Then said Jesus unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

1 Thessalonians 5:21 Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Romans 10:12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon him.
